<image:title>BIOGRAPHY - PHASE 6: WASHINGTON DC - SIXTH PHASE: WASHINGTON DC</image:title>
<image:caption>Dario Suro was appointed Cultural attaché of the Dominican Republic to Washington DC by recently installed President Juan Bosch, who had been a childhood friend, in 1963. This happened at a moment when Suro was burnt out by the frenetic pace of life he was leading in New York. Washington DC, offered a more comfortable lifestyle that was a notable improvement as far as his mental health was concerned, but without the artistic stimulus that he previously experienced in other cities in which he resided, and where he had rubbed shoulders with some of the artistic giants of those times- for example Diego Rivera, his teacher in Mexico, Antoni Tápies, whom he befriended in Spain and Franz Kline in New York. Despite meeting the most outstanding players in the art world of Washington DC and frequenting the city’s principal art galleries, nothing came close to his experiences in the places where he lived previously. There was an absence of the dynamism of important artistic movements that had stimulated and influenced him, allowing him to venture into worlds that created new visions. Suro’s arrival in Washington DC, with his family in 1963, coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the United States of America - this was a moment of jarring events. Assassinations, protests, violence, political turmoil, and social upheaval were prevalent and reflected in his canvases. The day of the assassination of President John F Kennedy, Suro impulsively created a heartfelt homage on the spur of the moment, consisting simply of the name KENNEDY directly splattered across the canvas with rage and without any previous planning process. Guns and blood suddenly appear as leitmotifs. He paid homage to the rebellious spirit of Angela Davis, Robert F Kennedy, Ernest Hemingway, and others through painting. Suro would spend 35 years, that’s most of the rest of his life in Washington, moving back to his homeland months before his death in 1997. Throughout those years he was in search, exploring obsessive themes: eclipses, clouds, thickets, Afro hair, eroticism, minimalism. Toward the end of his life he returned to his beloved Spanish Earth but meshed with new concerns and approaches. Eroticism and eclipses were often at the forefront, he reworked existing paintings, imposing new elements that created new visions. Shortly before his departure to the Dominican Republic, Suro expressed that he was anxious to return to his homeland as he was brimming with ideas that he desperately wanted to execute on large canvases dealing with his new idée fixe, large overwhelming shadows. He told close ones that these were already vividly planned in his mind and that he only needed to get in front of the canvas, with a brush, to carry out this plan. Suro did not get to see the realization of these works, dying on January 18th, 1997 at the age of 79 in Santo Domingo.</image:caption>

<image:title>BIOGRAPHY - PHASE 5: NEW YORK - QUINTA ETAPA: NEW YORK</image:title>

<image:title>BIOGRAPHY - PHASE 2: MEXICO - PHASE 2 : MEXICO Dario Suro married Maruxa Franco Fernandez in 1945 and shortly after, the young couple left for Mexico, stopping in Havana, Cuba, where they met some of the most important Cuban painters of the moment, including Fidelio Ponce, Carlos Enriquez and Amelia Pelaez. Suro also encountered his friend Jose Gomez Sicre, one of the most extraordinary figures in Latin American culture. They moved to Mexico because he had received a scholarship for studying art at the prestigious National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking, “La Esmeralda”, where he studied with the Maestro Diego Rivera and other prominent artists of the period, including Jesus Guerrero Galvan, Agustin Lazo and Manuel Rodríguez Lozano. His style changes dramatically during the four years he spent in Mexico. He quickly abandons the neo-impressionism that had brought him such popularity in his homeland and replaces it with something more real and radical - “Negroide” - undoubtedly strong and harder to take. Inspired by the nationalism that the Mexicans were passionate about at the moment, adopting this fervor to a Dominican reality and condition. Many of his compatriots were shocked by this sudden, drastic change. His wife was asked “What happened to your husband? Why is he painting such ugly works, where are those beautiful landscapes?” Performing the double duties of Cultural Attaché and art student, he befriended some of the most important cultural figures of the moment, including the philosopher Alfonso Reyes, the historian and critic Justino Fernandez, the painters Maria Izquierdo and Angelina Beloff (Russian born, first wife of Diego Rivera), the writer and critic Agustin Velazquez Chavez, he also met Jose Clemente Orozco, Frida Kahlo, Hector Xavier and Lupe Marin. His most important contact, however, was undoubtedly Jose Vasconcelos, legendary Mexican figure, Minister and great promoter of Mexican art, who would later play a crucial role in Suro’s professional life. During his stay in Mexico, Dario Suro received prestigious awards in the Dominican Biennials (1944-Second Prize & 1946-First Prize) and in Mexico, in 1946, he was included in a group exhibition of new painters at the prestigious Palace of Fine Arts. The following year he was given a one man show in the same august institution that was highly acclaimed by the press, receiving a lot of attention, even in the social press, where he is mentioned at parties and such as the “young Dominican painter Dario Suro”.</image:title>

<image:title>BIOGRAPHY - PHASE 4: SPAIN - PHASE 4: SPAIN</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1949 Dario Suro was named Cultural Attaché of the Dominican Republic to Spain, in Madrid, a job that he held until 1952. As in Mexico, he befriends some of the most prestigious players in the cultural sphere of the country and his art once again evolves, as he explores new territory. Among his new friends are three of the most important Spanish painters of the moment: Antoni Tapies, Manolo Millares and Antonio Saura. Likewise, he meets another extraordinary artist, the painter Jose “Pepe” Caballero, a truly amazing personage not only because of his art but because of his important links to major cultural figures, including Federico García Lorca, Pedro Neruda and Luis Buñuel. He also developed a close friendship with the poet, Carlos Edmundo de Ory, with whom Suro shared a studio & collaborated on several projects and who has recently been getting a great deal of attention in Spain. As Suro’s art drastically changes, he begins to abandon previous styles (Dominican and Mexican) as he opts instead for something that could be call a kind of “Pan-European Modernism” that was prominent at the time, consisting of Cubist elements that were rendered in a less formal manner. During his European years he not only becomes greatly passionate about the great classic Spanish masters but equally so about the Italians, British, Dutch and other artists. Goya and Velazquez are his special idols, as well Piero de la Francesca and El Greco. For the first time he begins to paint in an abstract manner, as the European experience offers different possibilities to explore - a new vision is at hand! During his years in Spain, he participates in important exhibitions with other artists as well as solo exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona, where Suro would get a more effusive reception so it seemed. He liked to kid about the fact that it probably had something to do with his Catalán name! At the time, he also was included in important international exhibitions - San Francisco (Legion of Honor) And Pittsburgh (Carnegie Institute).</image:caption>
